Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
