The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
