Merv Review – A Four-Legged Actor Dominates the Show in the Streaming Giant’s By-the-Book Christmas Romcom

This is a widely held belief among many that sharing custody a pet following a split is a recipe for trouble. The consensus suggests such arrangements prevent ex-partners from finding closure, lead to scheduling chaos, fuel disputes, and are a nuisance across the board. Seemingly, in a revelation suited to a streaming movie, it also makes our furry friends to become depressed.

While respecting the inner life of animals – pet parents attest to their remarkable empathy. If you need standout portrayal in dog sorrow, simply recall another performance. I firmly believe that a dog of Merv's nature, a scruffy terrier type played by the canine actor Gus, would struggle coping with divided living arrangements. The idea of basing a full holiday film on this conflict is sustainable remains rather doubtful.

A Familiar Formula

Fairness demands noting, Merv, the work of the writing duo and under the guidance of playwright Jessica Swale, doesn't pretend to be deeper than its premise. It functions as a seasonal offering from a corporate studio – the ambitions is limited. Its storyline unfolds as uncomplicated: a separated couple Russ (Charlie Cox) and Anna (Zooey Deschanel), confronting that their individual funk is matched by their dog's, decide on a cheer-up vacation to a luxury pet hotel. There, inevitably, they will presumably stumble toward the idea that they are better together. Side characters – played by Chris Redd, Jasmine Mathews, and others – serve as the usual assortment of types. Visually carries the feel of a branded content, with a Christmas setting that is obviously artificial – as seen in obvious snow effects surrounding green trees as a warm climate substitutes for the Northeast.

Where the Film Shines

Whether these standard ingredients merge into something enjoyable hinges on the strength of the performances and the viewer's appetite for easy entertainment. Regarding the second aspect, Merv hones in on a demographic – the kind who seek out for pet content. Audiences receive a plethora of canine-centric sequences. The main attraction is Merv himself, and though it results in some clunky cuts between the pet's "lines" and human reaction, the movie does offer dog beach fun, canine sorrow, and, finally, a tail-wagging resolution.

The Two-Legged Cast

The same praise cannot be applied for the interpersonal drama. Its style vacillates between emotional depth, zany antics, predictable love story, and silly gags, failing to master any one mode. No blame falls on Cox's performance, who is admirably committed the silliness and cringe inherent in the bizarre setting. He brings a endearing lack of ego that supplies much of the film's charm for this seemingly ideal couple. Her co-star Deschanel, true to her usual style, brings a distinctive offbeat energy that will click for some but not others. Her Anna seems a touch too detached, especially when contrasted against Cox's heartfelt sincerity. (It should be noted, the canine performer is convincing at looking despondent – he may not be Messi from that acclaimed drama, he's definitely a very good boy.)

Merv tries to give weight to Anna and Russ's relationship for scenes without their pet – which is unfortunate, given that the title character is by far the most adorable aspect of this feel-good picture. As one might predict, it just about gets by. The catalyst for their separation could have been more adult and realistic with greater exploration and more subtle storytelling. In the end, Merv is light and sugary, hitting precisely what you anticipate. Crafting a story about dog co-parenting has potential – even if it's not exactly a great one either.

  • Merv becomes available on Amazon Prime Video this December.
